Master Maltese potty training with our step-by-step crate schedule. Expert indoor training tips for Teacup & Standard Maltese puppies from home-raised breeders.

Maltese Potty Training & Crate Schedule: Fast, Home-Raised Techniques

Housebreaking a small toy breed requires consistency, gentle structure, and an understanding of tiny bladders. Whether you are welcoming a compact companion or a traditional family pet, implementing a predictable routine from day one ensures stress-free potty training success.

At Palvine Maltese Kingdom, our home-raised puppies undergo early crate familiarity and routine introduction before joining their forever homes. Here is our breeder-tested guide and daily potty training schedule for your new Maltese puppy.

Understanding Toy Breed Bladders

Due to their small digestive tracts, young Maltese puppies need frequent bathroom breaks. A good rule of thumb is that a puppy can hold their bladder for one hour for every month of age (e.g., a 2-month-old puppy needs a break every 2 hours max).

Recommended Daily Potty & Crate Schedule

Consistency builds quick habits. Follow this routine for puppies aged 8 to 16 weeks:

  • 6:30 AM — First Wake Up: Immediately carry your puppy out of their crate to their designated potty area (outdoor grass or indoor pad). Reward instantly upon completion.

  • 7:00 AM — Breakfast & Play: Feed according to our Puppy Care Guide and allow 20–30 minutes of supervised playtime.

  • 7:45 AM — Post-Meal Potty Break: Puppies almost always need to eliminate 10–20 minutes after eating.

  • 8:15 AM to 11:30 AM — Morning Nap: Rest inside their comfortable, quiet crate.

  • 12:00 PM — Midday Potty & Lunch: Bathroom break, followed by lunch and short indoor interaction.

  • 5:00 PM — Evening Dinner & Potty: Feed meal, followed by immediate bathroom trip.

  • 9:30 PM — Wind-Down & Water Cutoff: Remove water bowls 1.5 to 2 hours before bedtime to prevent nighttime accidents.

  • 10:30 PM — Final Nightly Potty Break & Bedtime: Direct to crate for sleep.

3 Core Rules for Maltese Housebreaking

  1. Never Scold Accidents: Small puppies do not connect past actions with current reactions. Clean up thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner to remove scent cues.

  2. High-Value Rewards: Praise lavishly and offer a small treat within 3 seconds of a successful potty break.

  3. Set Up a Safe Enclosure: When unsupervised, keep your puppy in a playpen equipped with an indoor pad, crate, and toys.
